Velika dvorana Nova Gorica Cultural Centre
The Nova Gorica Cultural Centre will celebrate Slovenia’s Presidency of the European Union by hosting the ‘Spirit of Europe’ Orchestra. The orchestra was established in 2004 in response to an offer from Dr. Erwin Pröll, Governor of the Austrian Federal State of Lower Austria. The role of the orchestra was to unite the countries of ‘New Europe’, to promote their integration with each other, as well as contacts with the older members of the European Union in the field of culture. The ‘Spirit of Europe’ is composed of thirty-five musicians from various European countries. The headquarters of the orchestra is in Melk on the Danube. The artistic director of the orchestra is Martin Sieghart who led the chamber orchestra of the Vienna Symphony for a number of years. Prior to that, he was the conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. During the relatively short artistic life of the ‘Spirit of Europe’ Orchestra, it has performed concerts in many European countries, Isreal, Egypt, Tunisia, and Ukraine. Every year, it performs in the Middle East as part of the ‘Dialog of Cultures’ project that promotes cultural exchange with Islamic countries.
In the concert at the Nova Gorica Cultural Centre, the ‘Spirit of Europe’ orchestra will play Shostakovich’s Concert for violoncello under Sieghart’s baton. In addition, Karmen Pečar, a twenty-two year old soloist, will perform for the Nova Gorica audience for the first time. The violoncello player attracted the attention of the musical public when, at the age of thirteen, she made her debut with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Elgar’s Concert for violoncello and orchestra. Since that time, she has performed many concerts in Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Germany and Italy and has invariably received glowing reviews.
