The Paizo String Quartet is composed of professional young musicians who have won several prestigious awards at international festivals. For two years, the violinist, Mikkel Futtrup, led the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. The other members of the quartet studied at the Danish Royal Academy of Music. In 1999, the Paizo String Quartet was established by Professor Tim Fredericksen within the department of chamber music studies at the Danish Royal Academy of Music. By the following year, the quartet had already participated at the Trondheim international competition for chamber music where they won the first place award, the audience award, and a special award for the best performance of a contemporary composition. The reputation of the group was confirmed in 2003 when they took another first place trophy, this time at a competition in Australia. This was soon followed by the appearance of the quartet at prestigious European festivals and concert halls. In 2001, the quartet put out its first CD that featured works by Ludwig van Beethoven. The name of the quartet has a mysterious, though suitable, meaning: the Greek word paizo means ‘to play’.
